Does Your Car Have Soul?

What is a soul?  Merriam Webster dictionary defines a soul as:  the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life; the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe.  With that definition in mind, I ask you – does a car have a soul?

On Saturday, my husband and I were driving to St. Petersburg, Florida to do a little shopping.  During the drive, we happened to be listening to National Public Radio and a show called Car Talk.  I never in my wildest imagination ever thought I would hear a segment of this show preaching about the care of a car’s soul.

A part of the call-in portion of the show was about a guy who had bought a 1990 Isuzu that he said he was soulfully connected to.  I could tell through his voice and breathing that he was truly troubled about a decision he had to make that would affect the soul of this car.

This car was having engine trouble and he had a neighbor, a car mechanic, who offered to work on this engine for a reasonable price.  Long story short, the mechanic failed to put coolant in the engine after repairing it, and while test driving the car, he blew out the engine – ouch!

The neighbor did everything he could to fix the problem to no avail.  Now the owner had to make a decision whether he should replace the engine, and if he did replace the engine, would he lose the car’s soul.

I don’t think anything from this day could have made me happier – not even my shopping.  I thought to myself while listening to this man, “what a gentle gesture from a gentle soul”.  He gets it.  Everything and anything has a soul, animate or inanimate.

Car Talk gets it too.  They explained to the man, if he replaced the engine in this car, it wouldn’t be the same car again.  They compared it to an individual receiving a transplanted organ from another individual.  They explained, “the recipient wasn’t the same again because this individual took on the characteristics of the original donor.”

Whoa!  I was blown away that I was listening to a Car Talk show, usually sharing fixes to life’s most annoying problems with cars, instead sharing profound knowledge about a soul.  Bravo to you Car Talk!

Now, I should contact Merriam Webster dictionary and have them add to their definition of soul:

the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life, whether animate or inanimate; the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, inanimate objects, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe

Until tomorrow, I soulfully send you my blessings and wishes for a prosperous and abundant day.
